A Great "Researchable Question" on Scottish Football

One of my MBA students executed a great piece of research on competitiveness in Scottish Football.  To his credit he completed an A grade piece of work and we've managed to place it into one of the papers.  His research question could be summarised as "does sound business strategy affect competitiveness more than  league structure does ?"

  1. once I had the opportunity to be in England, I was there few days, then I went to Scotland and I watched some Scottish Football and let me tell you that it is a very competitive league

  2. ... and yet, the gap between winners and the rest is getting bigger ... not just in the Scottish league but in a number of the big European leagues. UEFA have a real challenge to balance the interests of their bigger stakeholders against those of the minnows. As an Aberdeen fan I can only say, roll on next season ... hope springs eternal.

  3. in that case you are right, Celtic and Rangers seem to be the only ones that win leagues, it is very difficult for a small club with economic limitations to compete with the big wealthy clubs. And I agree, if we look at other European leagues like in Spain, especially, and England the gap is even bigger. However, the beauty of soccer is that it can surprise you anytime and humble clubs or national teams can become champions too, remember Greece in the UEFA Euro 2004.

    Best regards Robert!

  4. without wishing to make the kind of leap that I would chastise in a PhD thesis ... the Greece, 2004 case might lead one could ask what are the medium to long term consequences of unexpected victories ? That said, most football fans are quite happy to live in the moment and will trade future ruin for current success. Who knows, Scotland may recover from their 5-1 drubbing by the US and qualify for Brazil 2014. Hope springs eternal

  6. Sandeep ... if you have completed your MBA, doing a doctorate can be a great thing to pursue. Think carefully about the career you want to see following on from a doctorate. This will have a bearing on whether you choose a PhD (leading to work in academia) or a DBA (leading to an industrial role). It will also help you to decide on whether to study full or part-time. There are some other posts on the site that deal with these questions and you might already have looked at them. The other thing I'd say is that I usually advise my own students to wait a year after their MBA to see how they feel about it once the adrenaline of exams and graduation have passed. A doctorate will take you at least 3 years and is a non-trivial commitment to make.

    Good luck
