  1. Dear Professor MacIntosh,
I started following your blog in Oct. 2012, that`s when I started my PhD at Glasgow University and found your blog link on your profile.

I only met you once during a TCR session.

I wish you all the best at Heriot-Watt University, my research area is in strategic management and I will -for sure- continue to read this blog to benefit from it in my study and beyond.

    Thank you kindly.

    Best regards,

  4. Dear Prof Macintosh
I am registered for a phd in management of technology and innovation. My topic is on Demystification of nuclear technology: I want to start with my epistemological, ontological and philosophical views. Could you please assist

  5. Wow ... demystifying nuclear technology sounds a challenge. A lot will depend on what your intention is. For example, asking people how they make sense of their roles, the risks, the regulation that the industry is subject to, etc. would make for a fascinating PhD of one type. Whereas, trying to explain the physics involved would be a completely different thing. Read the post on the ologies, talk to your supervisor and try to figure out who you want to be speaking to in the literature. Good luck

  6. Hi Robert and Folks,

My first post. "Stumbled" on to this blog site recently.

Currently applying with Kent Uni, and Goldsmith Uni of London for my PhD in social work, Sept '13 start. Kent University is my preferred option. Live in London. My research interest is about challenging behaviour among people with autism and learning disability.
However, my topic/question is still ambiguous and unclear in my head. I need to write a 1000 word proposal for my application.
    Tips would be appreciated.

the earlier posts give you my take on how to approach a proposal. I'd write the 1,000 words with particular supervisors in mind. Scour the web, see what they do, mimic their methods, engage with their recent published work and try to convey the sense that you (a) know the relevant literature (b) have a view of a workable and researchable research question (c) have thought about data, access and ethics and (d) you look like a no brainer for the potential supervisor because you'll help him/her build their own research trajectory in the area.

    Good luck

    Robert

  9. Be as specific as you can ... start by reading articles from top-tier journals and follow both (a) your tastes and (b) the citation trail to find a community of scholars with which to engage. Good luck
